Spring Awakening: Refreshing Your Beauty Routine for Basanta Ritu

As the sun warms up and the vibrant colors of Basanta Ritu (Spring) take over, your skin and hair routine needs a refresh to match the changing humidity and blooming environment. This season is all about transitioning from the heavy hydration of winter to a lighter, more protective approach.

Here are some essential beauty tips to keep you glowing throughout the season:

1. Skin Care: The “Spring Clean”

With the increase in pollen and rising temperatures, focus on clearing pores and adding lightweight moisture.

  • Switch to a Gel Cleanser: Swap heavy cream cleansers for a gentle, foaming, or gel-based wash. This helps remove excess oil and sweat without stripping your skin’s natural barrier.
  • Exfoliate Twice a Week: Winter can leave behind a layer of dry, flaky skin. Use a mild chemical exfoliant (like Lactic Acid) or a gentle scrub to reveal a brighter complexion.
  • Don’t Skip the SPF: The spring sun can be deceptively strong. Ensure you are using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every single day, even if it’s cloudy.
  • Lightweight Hydration: Move away from thick cold creams. A water-based moisturizer or a Hyaluronic Acid serum will provide hydration without feeling greasy under the midday sun.

2. Hair Care: Managing Frizz and Shine

Spring humidity in Nepal can lead to unruly hair. Protection and scalp health are key.

  • Scalp Detox: Use a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks to remove buildup from sweat and pollution.
  • Floral Infusions: For a traditional touch, rinse your hair with water infused with hibiscus or rose petals. It adds a natural shine and a subtle spring scent.
  • Anti-Frizz Serums: Apply a light hair oil or serum to the ends of your hair to seal the cuticle against rising humidity.

3. Makeup: Fresh and Dewy

Basanta is the perfect time for a “no-makeup” makeup look that highlights natural features.

  • Pastel Palettes: Incorporate soft pinks, lilacs, and peach tones into your eyeshadow or blush to mirror the blossoms outside.
  • Tinted Moisturizers: Swap heavy foundations for a BB cream or a skin tint. It allows your skin to breathe while evening out your tone.
  • Lip Stains: Instead of heavy matte lipsticks, try a hydrating lip tint or a tinted balm for a soft, bitten-lip effect.

4. Internal Glow (Ritucharya)

Ayurveda suggests that during Basanta, our bodies naturally detoxify.

  • Hydrate with Infusions: Drink plenty of water. Adding mint or cucumber can help cool the body as the temperature rises.
  • Seasonal Eating: Incorporate bitter and astringent foods like bitter gourd (tite karela) or leafy greens to help balance the Kapha dosha, which can accumulate during this transition.
